What challenges have you faced as an executive, and how did you navigate through them?

As a woman of color in a male-dominated industry, I’ve encountered unique challenges. Rather than dwelling on those obstacles, I’ve focused on letting my work speak for itself. Throughout my career, I’ve navigated these challenges by becoming an expert in a specialized area of the business—viewership analytics. By mastering this field, I positioned myself as an indispensable resource, particularly when colleagues needed answers about ratings.

Whenever I interacted with my peers, I approached situations with confidence, relying on my 20+ years of experience to demonstrate my value. This approach shifted the focus from my gender and race to my expertise and contributions. Once people recognized me as a subject matter expert, they began to respect and appreciate the knowledge and value I brought to the table.

How do you maintain a work-life balance as an executive, and what practices help you stay grounded and focused amidst the demands of leadership?

To achieve a work-life balance, you have to take proactive steps—no one will provide it for you. It’s essential to set boundaries, as others will respect them once you do. One practice I follow is blocking one hour on my calendar during lunchtime when I work from home. During this time, I go to the gym or take my dog for a walk in the park.

That midday break reenergizes me and clears my mind. When I’m at the office, I enjoy scheduling coffee breaks with colleagues or holding team meetings outside when the weather permits. Taking breaks throughout the day is incredibly beneficial, as they help improve productivity and focus.  Lastly, always take your vacation days.

Vacations are invaluable for mental health—they lower anxiety, reduce stress, and help prevent burnout. Stepping away from daily responsibilities allows your brain to recharge, gain new perspectives, spark creativity, and enhance problem-solving skills. Prioritizing these practices ensures both your well-being and your productivity flourish.

What skills or attributes do you believe are essential for future leaders in the research industry to cultivate?

To succeed as a future leader in research, flexibility and adaptability are essential. The industry is evolving rapidly, particularly with AI, which accelerates changes in methodologies and tools. What worked yesterday may no longer be effective tomorrow.

In addition to adaptability, future leaders must stay curious, embrace change and commit to continuous learning to remain ahead of the curve. This involves keeping up with new technologies, such as advanced analytics platforms and AI-driven research tools, while being open to experimenting with innovative methodologies.
